A Couple of Quick Tips for Depression

By Alice Boyes, PhD. | Uncategorized

Sometimes when people have depression they grind down to very low activity levels.

While you’re working your way back from this, you’re likely to have thoughts like “I can’t do the dishes because I’m tired.”

If its depressed-tired rather than you need some rest tired…

Try 1

Try asking yourself if you would feel tired regardless of if you did the dishes or not. If you would feel tired both ways, then you may as well feel tired and do the dishes.

Try 2 – This is called “extending”

If your self talk is “I feel tired” try extending this to the point of ridiculousness

e.g.

“I am so tired I cannot even lift my eyelid”
or
“I am so tired I cannot sniff my nose”

Adding this irreverence can sometimes break the seeming choke hold of the thought.
