Review of “Snoop: What Your Stuff Says About You”
You can get the unabridged audiobook version of Snoop (download it to your computer in a few minutes) COMPLETELY FREE with this free trial of Audible Prof Sam Gosling Snoop Audiobook.
I recently finished listening to the audiobook version of Snoop by Dr Sam Gosling (Personality Psychologist).
It’s about clues you can get about other people’s personalities from outward signs like their offices, facebook profiles, handshakes, and houses.
I liked Snoop a lot.
I think one of the most useful things about Snoop is that its a great way for people to understand their own and other people’s personalities in terms of what psychologists’ call the “Big 5″ or “Five Factor Model” (technically there’s a difference between these but its not important for non-psychologists to know this).
The Big 5/Big Five is the most important psychological model of personality. Its supported by a huge amount of scientific research.
The premise of the Big 5 is that five dimensions are important in understanding people’s personalities: Extroversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness to Experience.
Everyone who’s interested in understanding their personality should learn about the Big 5 Personality Traits (and avoid personality theories like the Myers Briggs Type Indicator and Enneagram which aren’t supported by scientific findings in the way the Big Five/Five Factor Model is).
You can take a free online questionnaire to find out where you fit on each of the main Big 5 dimensions (and on subdimensions of the main five factors). It’s here – Big 5 Personality Traits Online Test.
It automatically calculates your scores so no hand scoring required.
However, it’s impossible to understand the results of the online questionnaire without having read something that will give you a usable knowledge of the Big 5. Snoop is great for that. Wikipedia etc. won’t cut it in this case!
Here’s a talk Sam gave to employees at Google. (If you’re reading via email, click the title link to watch the video)
Update: If you’re looking for more Sam Gosling – Here’s his talk at the Commonwealth Club.
